Decoding the blue light!

All of us are aware of the importance of sleep. If you are a student, sleep is your best friend, be it during bed or when you are bored or when the class is boring (we've all been there! 😉). On a serious note, lack of sleep is going to effect your health, concentration and most of all, its going to screw up your entire focus. With a lack of focus, forget about performance in your studies or work. This rule applies to all age groups. Ideally, an average adult must sleep a minimum of 6 hours (the recommended time is 7-8 hours). If you are one of those (like me) who struggles to sleep at night and have at some point searched it out on YouTube, you would have seen that the most common point among most of them is that they ask you to reduce the usage of electronics around 30 minutes to 1 hour before sleep. The reason cited for this is that blue light is harmful to our health. But why is it so?


LET'S DECODE.

Firstly, the visible spectrum is basically white light, which can be split into 7 colors namely, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.

You might be wondering, why violet and indigo aren't mentioned and only blue is. That's because every color combination is achieved from blue, red and green (RGB).

Now, blue light rays have the highest energy and the shortest wavelength. This high energy strains the eye and disturbs the brain during sleep time, causing it to not relax. The human eye is not equipped to filter blue light.Therefore, they ask you to avoid using gadgets as all displays used in gadgets are RGB based and obviously, emit blue light.

Now, you might say that before sleep is the only time you get to scroll through social media or do any other work on your phone.

The only way to work around this is to enable a reading mode or a blue light filter. If you sit at a computer for most of the day, make sure you wear a glasses which protect you from it.
Blue light causes long term damage which is noticeable in some and not all.

All that said, I would still suggest that you do not use any electronics atleast 30 minutes before sleep, thereby increasing your chances of getting better sleep.
